Ultra wide view

Click on the picture to see a more detailed view.

Comparison of field of view for different focal lengths

With shorter focal lengths, the field of view increases dramatically. Not only is the horizontal field of view increased but also vertically. In many situations this incrased vertical field is not required and can be cropped to give a panoramic view. An additional benefit of cropping is an increase in the camera frame rate and a decrease in required network bandwidth and storeage.

Comparison of the horizontal field of view relative to a typical 3-12mm lens:

Theia's SY125 series
1.3mm
125° HFOV
Theia's SY110 series
1.7mm
110° HFOV
Typical ultra wide
2.6mm
100° HFOV
(not shown)
Typical wide angle
3mm
90° HFOV
90% greater (*up to 140% greater with a 5MPix camera) 40% greater 20% greater base line

*Due to the slightly larger sensor size found in most 5MPix cameras (1/2.5"), Theia's SY125 and SY110 lenses give an even larger field of view of 135° and 120° respectively.

Because Theia's lenses are rectlinear and don't have the barrel distortion seen in most other wide angle lenses, the vertical field of view is greater for a similar horizontal field of view. In the example below, both pictures were taken from the same distance. The Theia SY110 lens keeps the building straight and shows more vertical field of view.
